Tirta Gangga Palace
The Maharaja of Amlapura, A. A. Ngurah Ketut Karangasem, created a remarkable water palace at Tirtagangga around 1947. Though seriously damaged following the earthquake of 1963, it was lovingly rebuilt and its presence still attests to the power of Bali's royal families. When you visit this place you will gain an appreciation of the importance of water in the day to day life of the Balinese.
Fed by natural clear sacred springs, the palace has a beautiful large natural swimming pool along with smaller adjacent pools. The water palace is situated not far from rice fields, and the cascading water of the pools seems to reflect an essential motif and theme of life in this still predominantly agrarian culture.
Just four miles from the water palace is Amlapurna, the home of an active palace that is open to the general public. A visit here gives a glimpse of life inside a Balinese royal family.
