Manggis Area
Manggis has recently become the site of a number of luxury hotels such as the Serai and the Amankila. The beach is clean and well tended, and Manggis is the ideal location if you wish to visit a traditional village such as Tenganan. Famous for their unusual customs and festivals, the people in these Bali Aga or original Balinese villages have remained fairly isolated from the modern world. Their villages are walled in to prevent outsiders from intruding. The Tenganese are also known for their intricate textile traditions. They weave a double ikat variety of cloth known as gringsing. It is only made in small quantities and it is said to be able to protect a wearer from black magic.
Once a year there the Usaba Sambah festival, when local men wrap their fists with sharp pandanus leaves and fight until blood is spilt. At the same festival, a ceremonial ferris wheel - cranked by hand - is assembled and the girls of the village are spun around in accordance with tradition.
